Description:

The Heron Spirals, A Commonplace Book traces both writer/educator Caroline Balderston Parry’s roots and the spiraling routes of spiritual growth through the midlife crisis of widowhood and into new roles.   Above all she celebrates the examined life — and herons!  Her vivid text details the dance of the seasons and the herons in Mud Lake, an urban wetlands along the Ottawa River, and farther afield.  Like the old commonplace books, The Heron Spirals includes many prose, poetry or song quotations and the artist Roderick MacIver ’s gentle watercolours, which richly compliment the whole.

Caroline’s bio:

Caroline Balderston Parry is a Quaker, author, poet, celebrator and visual artist. Educated at Westtown School and Radcliffe College, she volunteered and married in South India, taught in England, and began writing for children. She and her English husband emigrated to Canada in 1973, where their two children were born. A freelance performer and writer since young adulthood, she emerged from the mid-life crisis of sudden widowhood into new roles, and currently serves the Unitarian Church of Montreal as Director of Religious Education. Caroline enjoys spending her summers in Ottawa.

About the visual artist Rod MacIver:

Tributes:

“Like Jacob, Caroline has been wrestling with the angels, refusing to let go until she has secured a blessing by which she might bless others.  Hers is a fine, astonishing, human work, and what results is not prettiness but the kind of beauty that walks with a limp, yet forward.”
– Kate Braestrup, community minister, law enforcement chaplain, and author of the New York Times bestselling memoir, Here If You Need Me, Marriage and Other Acts of Charity, and Beginner’s Grace:  Bringing Prayer to Life

“This is a book in which the spirit finds shape and takes wings. The paintings and the prose merge into something splendid, serene, sure. You must take it up, put it down and ponder.”

– Mary Jo Leddy, activist and author of numerous books, including Radical Gratitude and At the Border Called Hope: Where Refugees are Neighbours

  5. Hi Joyce –I am still a relative novice at replying to comments on my website, so sorry I missed this, but I guess the postage was less than 3x$11, in the end, right? I think you only bought two, and the postage was less than $22.
